late night early morning…

Big Shout out to my Son, Jackson and Sean, sporting the Yacht Club gear, best brew house in North Carolina! Liam hit me up with the vid below of Chicano Superman. My Mom was a big Latin Jazz and Soul fan (and just music in general), she would have gotten a kick out the fact that Liam had discovered that vibe on his own. These guys fucking nail it live, gotta see what the studio stuff is like.
Joe Strummer rolling a doob (apparently taken by Cucho P.). The vid below from ’80 features the almighty Mikey Dread and the Clash playing one of my faves…

Mentioned it before, that the Relics has been listed in this thing called the Indie Bible, which is apparently some kind of resource for folks looking to get their music out there. Shit you not (all 8 of you regulars), I get 6 or 7 requests a day from folks looking for reviews. It’s cool in a way, but there’s no way I can wrap my damaged brain around writing that much shit…plus some of the music presented is very much not up my alley and why waste my time putting it down (who the fuck am I anyway). Let me share a few with y’all and see whatcha think…

Pete, Griff Clawson’s PR guy hit me up a couple times with this here tune released on the 21st of this month. In his second note, he indicated that, “This listen is an ideal match with your early morning coffee” to which I wrote back, “Indeed, good start to the day groove.  I would say though that this is more for a younger generation like my Granddaughters who are in their teens, rather than for a grumpy old burnout like myself…never the less enjoyable and I ended up listening to it several times.” …and I did enjoy my bold iced coffee along with a feeling of optimism while listening to it tonight.

Long time Mustard Relic (a Martyred Heretic original, even), Michael Lauden hit me up today (or was it yesterday, I’m on COVID time) and brought this thing of beauty to my attention. First word that came to mind was ‘brutal’ but that is just a fucking way overused word when it comes to extreme (another way over used word) music, so how about… savage · cruel · bloodthirsty · vicious · ferocious · barbaric · barbarous · wicked · murderous · cold-blooded · hard-hearted · harsh · ruthless · callous · heartless · merciless · pitiless · remorseless · sadistic · unfeeling · inhuman · heinous · monstrous · abominable · atrocious · vile · infernal · uncivilized · bestial · brutish · beastly · animal…ahhhh, maybe all those don’t work…’callous’ is a good one though. I’m more partial to the slower jams like “There Is A Disease In Their Hearts” and especially “Bring Shame” which is hands down the hit.

Not sure the target audience is “a grumpy old burnout like myself” but I gotta be honest, I kinda dug it. Yes, it’s not like anything I would have sought out, way too heavy on the pop side of the tracks, but it’s a well written catchy ditty, dude is no doubt talented (and I will be letting my Granddaughters know about this guy) I liked his quote in the press thingy, “I feel as an artist it’s my duty to go into the darkness and bring something back that’s tangible for the world to love.” Ahhh…the darkness…
This gal captivated me with the above vid a while back, probably even posted it, but it’s worth posting again because it’s breathtakingly beautiful and grimly satisfying. Could really go on and on, but somehow I got on her mailing list and apparently she has some new stuff up on Bandcamp along with a bunch of older stuff too. Lot’s of new stuff for old Mustard to listen to…

And then there was a lot of acts that just sounded like plain old shit to me….nothing edgy, nothing soulful, nothing captivating, just nothingness and a complete waste of my time to go through…on the other hand I still stand by the ideal that no music sucks, by definition…it’s all art. Context and sound…

Damn it’s getting late (or early I suppose for vampires) so it’s time to wake the fuck up with a shameless semi-nude of none other than Siouxsie stolen from somewhere on fucking Facebook (so I am yet again unable to give credit). Fuck a duck, screw a pigeon, get religion…what the hell is going on in this thing…favorite performer is the wasted ass looking motherfucker in the foreground.

Mr Bungle news via my pal Josh Hanson, former Humboldt head, multitalented musician and brilliant mind. This is the 2nd time recently we have been informed of Bungle news, how about another brand new vid?

And then there was Jenee Halstead…I wrote back to the PR folks, “I’m a sucker any time an artist is described as a singer songwriter, I’m a child of the 70’s, the heyday of the that type of groove.  Memories of riding around with my Mom in her VW bug listening to this kind of music on the AM radio.  This definitely has a more modern pop vibe, but I can dig it mainly because her voice, at times, is sort of a blend of 70’s singer songwriter country-esque and the sound of the somewhat more modern 4AD label sirens, with just a touch of lounge. The hit for me on the EP is Disposable Love.”

Really dig this last one, dark 80s-esque tune that reminds a fella of the glory of BauHaus and the Jesus and Mary Chain, with of course a modern spin. The tune was released just this past Friday the 23rd (so many deadlines have come and gone).

For my dear friends in Sweden, thanx Björn these guys fucking nail it for man!!!

Ooze from slimy depths below…

Not going to go off on a tirade about shit tonight…this drawing by some unknown person is extremely powerful to me (apologies for not giving credit, because it is certainly due)…fucking gnarly evil! What better band to flow into than the Plasmatics, doing Doom Song from the Metal Priestess 12″ EP (John Candy and Wendy, two folks who are gone that I thought pretty highly of).

Shiva and the Hazards

As I said in the previous post, somewhere in that transition from the 70s to the 80s there was an explosion that set into motion a fracture tearing music into a 1000 pieces. Genres begat genres begat genres…to where today there are million little cubie holes to put music into. Got a personalized request for a review from a band called Shiva and the Hazards…

“I fucking dig it!!!” That was my immediate response to them. Based on my limited knowledge of music, I have no idea where to pigeon hole these guys, but in the press release 90s Britpop and shoegaze are mentioned. Outside my realm of expertise and also mentioned are bands like Cast, Ride, The Verve, The Stone Roses, the DMA’s, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and The Black Angels…who the fuck are those guys…no clue. Now, these Shiva guys though, are definitely on my radar with this Revolution Son tune. I feel like Columbus discovering something people already new about…this shit rocks! Here’s what some other folks had to say…

“Shiva & The Hazards are no opening band, but a force to be reckoned with. A poptastic psychedelic force at that.” –  LIBEL

“Melbourne psych-rockers Shiva and the Hazards have dropped an acid-laced, space traveller in Angkor Wat.” – HAPPY MAG

“With swirling moments lingering between Verve and The Stone Roses, Shiva And The Hazards have produced a ripping track of Madchester and ‘90s Britpop soaked in psychedelic grooves.” – SCENESTR

Anyway, this monster of a tune is out now!

How many times you gonna kill me…

You know you’re a nerd when you’re taking screen captures of cool shit in the World of Warcraft game. Best distraction from the ugliness of reality, there is…could go on and on about it but unless you’re a WOW Head you just don’t know. I may have mentioned it before, but if I had this in the late 70s /early 80s when I was a Dungeons & Dragons fiend, you woulda never seen me again…and so much pain and suffering would have been avoided, along with all those “good” times too….hahahahaha
The epitome of GAM (Gifted Asshole Musicians)…hands down my favorite song by them…takes me back to when I was like 9 years old…proud Kiss Army member circa’78!
Busking neo-bluegrass hitchhiking train hoppers! Been totally on a trip for this kind of homegrown music. As an idealistic 18 year old, that playing music on the street thing was something I thought I would do, and oddly, now that I think about it, the three bands I played in where essentially just homegrown hardcore acts playing at many a “street” party (Brian, or any of you other heads that I jammed with remember when we were banned from The Jambalaya…fucking over 21 club anyway right)…
Ya ever have Aileen Carol “Lee” Wuornos pop into your head? These guys (I) have! Can’t remember when I was first introduced to DKF, for some reason I’m thinking from a vinyl compilation that I have, regardless, love the beat and the samples…I believe this is what they call rhythmic noise, but there’s so many sub-genres within Industrial music and really just music in general (something happened in the late 70s/early 80s, a supernova of creativity. Anyway, “How many times you gonna kill me?”
My long time fellow trouble finder and Brother to the end, Sang hit me up with this gentleman, who as you can tell is quite popular in Korea. I wonder if fans who are gassing on someone performing, realize who much that gasses the artist? Rap is difficult to play live, some people can’t pull that off, but I think in this case it works, especially with an audience that is that animated…fucking love it.
