They came to me…

1980 Belushi & Go Gos
Big time Belushi fan and the Go Go’s were at the top of their game in 1980 as far as I’m concerned, spiraling out of control after that to become one of the premier pop of the 80s (cheers to their success and their ability as artists to make a living, but that later stuff is just not my cup tea).  Check out this vid from 1978, dig it or don’t, they were raw as fuck…

2020-08 Jefe
Jeff “El Jefe” Langdon is an amazing artist in general, but his photography has always captivated me…dudes got all kinds of tricks up his sleeve, I’m not even sure what all goes into these kinds of photos. Top notch Jefe!

Made the leap back onto the fucking facebook wagon a couple weeks ago, minus half my so called friends…very liberating. I’ve missed a few of my homies so made the plunge and am happy to reconnect (kinda sad that we have to communicate through social media because people have time for nothing else but scrolling…oh well). Was immensely pleased to fin out (on fucking FB) that a gentleman has taken on the huge task of uploading some of Humboldt’s best music for something like 4 decades. I got a hold of him and will be sending everything I have digitally (44 GBs) on a flash drive and some of this stuff will finally get the credit due…otherwise it would be just lost to time. Anyway, Nick’s site called, A Tape of Interest – Humboldt County Freaks – 1980’s to the 2010’s! He’s already got a bunch of neat tapes uploaded, so if you’re as fan of music from Humboldt or just curious about the phenomena, please do yourself a favor and check that out…

headbanger2(Speaking of Humboldt) Our old pal Brian, a long time Relic, sent me off on a Mr. Bungle tangent when he informed me they’re releasing a new album, a rerecording of The Raging Wrath Of The Easter Bunny Demo…”Trevor Dunn, Mike Patton and Trey Spruance are joined by Scott Ian and Dave Lombardo for the band’s first album in 21 years!” The vid below is solid as fuck on it’s own, but on top of that you get something that could only be Bungle!

And then there’s this live set from just before the Covid-19 shit in February of this year…Jed Watts, the original drummer has a cameo!

This here I posted a while back, but while on a Humboldt tip, and in case you didn’t see it when it was originally posted, I present to you, what I feel is the best album/band to ever come out of Humboldt (there are some other very notable bands like One Man Running, Brent’s TV & Appliances and of course later, the prolific Hitch). Grimace, was massive though, super cool guys doing some really technically sound metal marinated in Humboldt sauce and live they were indeed a beast to behold…

LSD ME

MotorheadGAM = Gifted Asshole Musician…anybody know what I mean? I’ve heard second hand stories but I haven’t met a whole lot of the asshole variety, for which I am grateful. You know who was a hell of a guy though (and yes I am probably repeating myself), fucking Lemmy! He shared a few minutes of his time, gave 14 year old hesher me a Heineken and an autograph on the empty bottle…might seem silly, but 37 years latter it’s still in the old memory banks. Amazing how far a little kindness goes…

Been in a funk, for god knows how long, but you know how it is, funks come and go.  This past week was good and, two days into this one, it’s going alright.  I am trying not to expect so much, instead looking at all the goodness that’s been there all along. the rest can just get flushed down the toilet as far as I’m concerned.  It was my Son’s birthday yesterday and got to talk to him.  He is doing fucking amazing and has turned out to be a one of the finest human beings on the planet.  Took me way back to the day he was born…his journey into this world was quite difficult, just ask his Mom.  When he was being delivered the first thing he saw was me (maybe not everyone’s choice for the first thing to see) and I immediately started bawling.  With the tears flowing heavily, our eyes met and somehow there was a spectacular connection.  Years latter in my deepest darkest drunken days, he was my only desire to live (just barely, death was calling me, I could here the whispers in my ear), I didn’t want him to have to live with my death.  I’d be wasted at his bedtime, and I’d still read to him.  I don’t think he noticed the slurring as he was too young.  It’ll be 15 years that I haven’t had a drink on the 31st of this month, and we still share our moments with each other.  In some ways he is like me (thankfully not in all ways), he likes the ladies like his old man but, appreciates beauty in it’s many forms, from a good book to a day out on a pond fishing.  Reminds me of how we would go fishing at Swank pond not too far from here.  There wasn’t a lot of big fish in that pond but we had a spot where you were pretty guaranteed to catch a few smaller ones.  There’s plenty  of bad memories in my old noggin but lately it’s been the good times that have been on the tip of my tongue.  Anyway, Son, if you’re reading this, know that my love ofor you is only as finite as the ever growing universe….

My bestest friend in Sweden is sometimes sending me songs that are spinning on his virtual turntable (although he is going through and really spinning every one of his records right now, having started when Covid hit). This band is totally new to me and this song just rocks, reminds me of my days at the now defunct radio station in college, KHSU….college rock…

Tit Wrench at the CasbahPosting this pic again to remind y’all what wonderful thing live music is and to remind myself that I used to go to show pretty often back in the day (this is proof that I at least went to one show…can ya find me in the crowd). Tit Wrench was a gifted bunch of guys, but they weren’t assholes, and put on a damn good show, too.

2020 gets the gas face…

2020-08-15So fucking proud of my beautiful Granddaughters and being a Grandfather, or Poppy, as I’m known to them. Made my day hanging out with them this weekend. I worry though, of course, knowing the vile side of humanity, what do they call it….the underbelly and these girls are so naïve. Hopefully most of the shit storm that life can be, passes them over and blesses with them everlasting smiles. I was smoking weed by 10 and dropping acid by 14…I don’t know that I want that for them or the ensuing madness that went on for the next 40 years. Fortunately they do not carry my flawed genes and so will not inherit that garbage (10 pounds of shit in a five pound bag – Weedeater)…

Ran across this tune recently (long story) and was pleasantly surprised to find this version from their LP, which differs from the one I’ve known about, since forever, on the PEACE compilation. Great tune, that of course still holds it’s own today…
S.C.U.M. – So Much Hate

I have a choice in my car (my Mom’s old Subaru with 245k miles on it), the radio (one classic rock station I like comes in not too bad) or the rap mixtape CDr that’s stuck in the CD player.  First song on the CDr is this dandy of a tune that was written in part to slam 3rd Bass.  Apparently there was some drama between 3rd Bass and the Beastie Boys, like there is some times in the world of famous type people and I guess specifically in the hip hop world.  One of my favorite BB tunes…

Don’t know too much about 3rd Bass, but this was their hit…

My pal Josh Hanson doing his thing and I’ll be damned if he didn’t fucking nail it with this new batch of tunes. Dude is insanely talented and I have, for a long time now, marveled at how fucking intelligent he is (I can’t even wrap this old burnt out mind around how deep he can get). This collection really highlights that septic ton of talent and intelligence. I am jaded as usual, because I really like Josh as a human being (a rarity for me these days as my disappointment in the human race is at an all time high), but the reality is that this virtual album is beyond epic and hits a personal note with me with it’s interpretation of Jesus’ philosophy (something convoluted since the get go). Not only do these tunes make you groove, but they make you reflect on everything you may have been force fed. Please listen at least the first tune…

one turd can stink up a room full of Relics

RolloUncle Woodrow from Sanford & Son died yesterday at the age of 91 and it brought back memories of watching that show. Lots of good characters on it but my favorite was Rollo (Pat Morita’s character is a close 2nd), Lamont’s best friend…that epic episode where Lamont has weed growing in the yard and Rollo is like let’s fucking smoke it! Hemp grows wild here but don’t smoke that shit, instant headache.  Eventually and unfortunately the constant bickering on the show made it unwatchable for me although the 70s were a very different era and it was a good time to be a kid.  Maybe nostalgia gets the best of me and my mixed up kid mind didn’t realize that it was just as fucked up as it’s always been with humanity.

Fred SanfordWas talking to my pal, the King of the Bass, Brian, the other day (and this is sort of an aside, but I can’t stand texting. People have gotten to where they can’t carry on a decent conversation, the art of face to face dialog is fading rapidly. Instead, I text you, you answer sooner or later, hopefully and then I have to try and decipher exactly what you mean based on limited emotionless communication. So yes I was actually speaking to B over the phone), and I told him that several year ago, the first time I heard the phrase “it is what it is” used in conversation was from him. My take on it is that basically that some things are out of your control and you just have to live with it. Well now I hear all kinds of people using that phrase. Interesting…so Brain stated that he had another phrase that could mean the same thing, “a hippo’s gonna be a hippo.”  You heard it here first!

My pal Jeong Sang Ho texted me the other day a link to this song with the caption, “this song melts my heart.”  Indeed!  I remember listening to this back in the late 80s with Sang and thinking, this dude has incredible taste in music, hidden gems that move you in a way that you’ve never been moved before…he was a professor when it came to music.  This version shows just how real her voice is in a song that is played to perfection…anybody can play a song a thousand times in the studio and come up with a damn good song, but live, that’s the shit…

This Mortal Coil – Song to the Siren

I must admit that in a very scary way the fucking YT algorithms are fucking spot on, so here we are thirty something years later and I get the original handed to me like John the Baptist’s head on a platter.  Tim Buckley is simply amazing on this song, again live, handing you his heart…
Tim Buckley – Song to the Siren

This version is sadly…No Bueno…I don’t know maybe you might dig it but it pales in comparison to those other two…
Robert Plant – Song To The Siren

I had been wanting to post this 7″ on fucking YT some years back, but I found it odd that it wasn’t already there in all it’s glory.  Being a paranoid old man, fearing consequences, I did not cuz I felt like it was one of those ones that get you dinged for a fucking copyright infringement and your account suspended or worse, the ultimate sabotage, banned and deleted…put a lot of work getting those 200 some odd Relics out there in the first place…

Grudge – Project-Ex

My Greek pal, Panos sent me this link on the anniversary of Hiroshima, an event which of course happened as a result of countries divvying up all the German and Jewish scientists, fucking Oppenheimer.  Another toy to feed the war machine and strike fear like only terrorists could.  Then to the arms race and the now forgotten but ever looming threat of total annihilation… pornostroika · Pornostroika Dadaifi – Pyrinikos Minotauros (The Quiet American)
