ab-so-fucking-lute-ly amazing!

Jeru The Damaja

JeruJust discovered this longtime artist via an email he personally sent me, which when you think about it, is huge for the Relics and hats off to Jeru The Damaja who despite his fame still has a DIY ethic. That kind of attitude is rare in these times, it’s a cruel world we live in, but after checking this new tune, Power, that he offered up (released back on July 11th) and then checking out a shit ton of his other stuff, I realized that Jeru is a rare sort altogether. Few people want to really except the reality of our times, he spells it out in prose, “unity is the enemy, that’s why they killed Dr. King…Power to the people.” If you don’t like to use your brain, when you listen to sweet rhymes and blasting beats, this may not be for you. This harkens back to some of the old East Coast, heavy knowledge acts like Boogie Down Productions, Public Enemy and Eric B & Rakim.  From wikipedia, “an American rapper and record producer best known for his 1994 debut album, The Sun Rises in the East, ranked as one of the 100 greatest hip-hop albums of all time by the editors of About.com.”

Back on the 11th of this month, he sent me this email…”Today is the day, my new single “POWER” is available everywhere you listen to music. I’m really excited for you to hear this song. I made it with you in mind, one who respects Hip Hop culture and enjoys great music. Help Intelligence and substance outperform ignorance.” Of course, I’ve been too stuck in my head lately, to do much about the huge influx of review requests, so I replied to him, “Dude Jeru! I am inundated and overwhelmed with requests for reviews right now, I’ve got over ten requests in the last ten days and as much as I love hyping new bands, I’m just not feeling it at the moment…I’m deep in the matrix right now. With that said, I do want to say thank you for submitting your music and hitting up the Relics…a tall cup of water and a wide cup of coffee to your success and happiness! Your tune is huge, gotta respect anyone who samples “power to the people.” and ended up listening to some of your other stuff on fucking Y/T…fucking love your art dude. Shit, your music is a light of intelligence in an increasingly idiotic world.”  And then I got to thinking after I wrote that, he wasn’t really asking me to review that tune, he was just saying, why don’t you give this tune a listen.  As a responsible music lover, I’m going to pass the joint to y’all…

Grooved on his vids going way back, dude has defintely put in some work, but I would have to say that this one is simply amazing (‘Rona recent and be sure to check out his interview on Plugin Alliance)…

1988 Me & SangHigh as fuck…probably…me and Sang. My room judging by the posters but I can’t place the spot other than it’s obviously Humboldt County while we were in school up there.

1989 Me & MatchThe 11 St. house in the Arcata bottoms. Many a quiet party and various goings on there, it wasn’t until a bunch of us got on the roof to look at the aurora borealis that the landlord finally kicked us to the curb. Must have been somebody’s birthday based on the cake I’m cutting. Two highlights there were getting beat up by Dave Slam when we’d all take turns fighting each other with boxing gloves on, and getting my belly button pierced by Sherri Frost with a giant fucking safety pin.  This was our “thin” phase…

1994 Burbank in HumboldtCalled this one Burbank in Humboldt as everyone in the pic is a former prisoner of Burbank High School. I think I got the year wrong (1994), if I’m not mistaken the bulk of my homies just came up for a visit, maybe ’91 or ’92…Kevin Hasley, Ki Baik, Me, Greg Lewis, Davrick Waltjen, Match Batham and Alex Escudero…

Well homies, if you saw this I dedicate this Devin the Dude to ya…

I me mine…

IMG_0859Well I’m back…from what and to what, I don’t rightly know, but at the moment I’m feeling alright and that’s just dandy. Good to be back here, my virtual home away from home, listening to bitchen music and contemplating life’s universal questions. The blog was busy as fuck, thanx to the most part to Karen and the short post I did on her super sick Twin Peaks themed AirBnB. Thanx to Stevo again for letting me into his world with the interview we recently did too.  Have to remind myself that in spite of the masses of idiots, there are a few gems to be found on occasion and those are the kind of folks I need in my life (and hopefully I have something to offer that makes it worthwhile).   There’s lots of artists looking to the Relics these days for one of my outlandish reviews, by way of this thing called the Indie Bible.  I just don’t have the time or the gumption to be writing 1 or 2 reviews a day.  Anyway, speaking of good folks to surround yourself with, below is a video of an old school chum of mine (he was two years ahead of me and probably has no recollection of my sorry self) dancing his ass off to one of the most important tunes in the history of hardcore punk…classic!

This tune, along with a ton of others from the BCT comp Last White Christmas,  was posted a long time ago here, before the copyright wars.  I put it up on fucking YT because it was nowhere to be found there and except for the Raw Power stuff on said comp, this tune is the best of the best.  From Discogs, “Raw garage punk band from Pisa, Italy, active in 1981-83. The band released only a demo tape, “Dream’s Dust Factory” in 1983; from the split of the Useless Boys were born two of the best italian underground bands of the 80s: Maurizio Curadi and Daniele Caputo founded The Birdmen Of Alkatraz, Alessandro Ansani the Liars.”

Not sure when this rad tune was filmed, but these French dudes have been around since ’79. I believe I mentioned them in a previous post as a buddy of mine turned me onto them a while back.  Not a whole lot of notable French bands, that I can think of, but these guys hit the nail on the fucking head…dig the whole high energy live vibe.

Poor Darby…

Suicide is no joke, especially when it hit’s close to home.  I know at my worst I wished I was dead but just didn’t have my shit together enough to accomplish even that…I mean shit how was I gonna get a bottle if I was dead.  This tune was on my radar again, thinking about someone I care about who is going through hard times…not my first world garbage, but a real shit storm.  All you can do is offer help…

Came to the realization that our selfish human nature is like a baby fighting for a tit and then that contentment when the tit is won.  My dogs fight over scraps of food despite the fact that they aren’t malnourished, have never been left hungry and are actually overfed.  My dogs aren’t as well fed as my super pal, Brian, who sent me his recipe for dog food, per my request.  We haven’t tried it yet, and I think with our big dogs we’ll just use it as a treat, but this is exactly what a dog needs…
