…he brought home the bacon, so that, no one knew…

JJWas going through old drafts of posts, which was interesting (in my own little world). I failed a lot of folks on reviews as there was a bunch of half written shit that never got posted (important behind the scenes stuff). Over a hundred drafts of half formed shit, not quite a healthy turd, but not totally watered down either. Deleted some them that just made no sense anymore, but there might be some I will salvage in the coming months. This was originally going to be a post about a 7″ that I had by the band Janitor Joe.  Am Rep for reals, these guys slay it. Never understood the whole genre being called “Noise” as I thought the sound really defined it’s self in the how musically accomplished some of these bands were…more like a post punk jazzy kind of thing (then again I never thought of “Grunge” as sounding grungy). On a side note the bass player, who was out-fucking-standing, sadly, is a member of the 27 Club. Anyway, a nice live set below that includes both the songs on the 7″, I believe…

phonoHad a decent stereo set up back in the day, but it has taken me many years to get where I’m at today, which is just dandy. Got a mish mash of components, that all together make a better than average sound system. You should have seen my setup when I started this blog 11 years ago…in my first world way, I spent a little time complaining about it.  I was just trying to learn how to rip records and cassettes, and get into this silly music blog dream. The only thing left from the old system is the 5 disc CD changer, that is pretty much obsolete and I don’t foresee getting used, but the turntable sits nicely on top of it.  Was listening to some…you guessed it…Slayer, earlier, in the form of the Reign In Blood demo ( recent purchase from my bootleg guy and was quite pleased.  RIB was the last Slayer album I cared about and this is demo stuff is immensely good, better than the album, just cuz I prefer a less polished sound. Of course it’s on you fucking tube, so you too can compare, but my boot sounds even better…

A lot of rain lately here in NoWhere Kansas, and elsewhere, made me think of this silly nursery rhyme…
Rain, rain go away
Come again another day.
Rain, rain go away
Little Johnny wants to play.

Alt. lyrics…

Rain rain go away,
Come again another day.
Little Johnny wants to play;
Rain, rain, go to Spain,
Never show your face again!

That never show your face again part is pretty harsh, almost like a curse, a little kid casting an evil spell. We were, and elsewhere, in a drought and now it’s this 40 days and 40 nights kinda thing. I’d like to read up on this global warming thing in more detail, but I have a feeling it would just leave me depressed. We’ve left this ever increasingly hideous world for future generations…our kids and their kids, I fear are in for quite a ride. Meanwhile…micro plastics!
2019 John BrownAnybody know who this fella was…the most important figure in post-colonization Kansas? This was taken at the capital several months back when I went there for work to advocate for persons with Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities…

Cindy WlsonCindy Wilson of the B-52’s, a heartthrob of mine as a youth. A lot of humor in their songs, but it seems like in those early tunes, there was an underlying sadness in her voice…

Was on a Smiths kick early this morning, which inevitably leads to some kind of self pity. Funny though, got to thinking about it and the best Smiths line, from the song Handsome Devil, is, “let me get my hands, on your mammary glands.” Creepy way of saying it, in fact, next time you’re feeling frisky with your lady friend, you might mention that. I had a friend who was a stripper by trade (never knew her by her stripper name, she was always just Jen to me), she asked me, “Justin, how do you like tits on a woman.” I told her, I have no preference, and then I thought about it and jokingly told her, bouncing up and down in front of my face. She was always nice to me when she saw me despite the FACT that I was an ugly person at that time and did ugly things to people. I could easily say it was the alcoholism, but the reality was it was me. I hope she is well. In fact I hope you are all well, if you’re feeling down, I hope for once in your life you get what you want (as long as you’re not fucking someone else over in the process)…

Not the most PC title or literal subject matter (what the fuck do you want, it was something like 40 years ago), but the tune for me is about leading an apparently normal life, but having a secret…he brought home the bacon, so that, no one knew.

Memorial Day is a somber holiday for me, but everyone has their take on what you’re supposed to do on any given day, it seems like.  As far as I’m concerned, do whatcha gotta do, ya know.  No graveyards for me today, I’ve got them at my house…

War Möth – CD

WMlogo

Was beyond stoked when one of my favorite Humboldt musicians, Sean Ennis, asked me if I would review his (one of countless over the years) band’s new CD…my response was “I would be most honored Mr.Ennis!”  During my 7 year stay in Humboldt County, I developed an infatuation and a deep respect for the music that is/was generated over and over again in that once wonderful place (I don’t know if it’s still wonderful, the outside world has creeped in faster than the place has the ability to adjust, according to some of my pals that never left).  Sean is part of a long line of extremely talented musicians, that continues into the future (I hope) and he’s been in a quite a few memorable bands (they all are) including Henpecker, Splinter Cell, Former Chimps, etc. the list goes on and on of past and present bands.  War_Moth_Humbrews_20190309I don’t know a lot about your musical scene, wherever that may be, but Humboldt County, in it’s isolation I suppose, breeds incestuous bands…some of these guys play in 3 and 4 bands at a time and have probably played with each other in different bands of different genres.  I miss it terribly, but thank God guys like Sean keep me in the loop

I don’t know where War Möth fits in the scheme of things up there, but they are big in the loop as far as I’m concerned and really are one of those ones that could do well outside the microcosm of Humboldt.
I was going to do a song by song type of review (not one I normally do), but fuck these guys are all over the map, in the best of possible ways, not one dull moment, textbook RnR/Metal history lesson….every song is completely different from the next.  You don’t know which tool (genre) they’re going to clobber you with next, and yet they’re all War Möth. “War Möth plays original heavy rock ‘n’ roll! Influenced by classic 1970’s and ’80s hard rock and heavy metal.” That’s a tall, broad order, but I’ll be damned if these guys don’t nail it every fucking time. Immense variety isn’t what it’s all about though, you also get superior, top notch musicianship, compelling song writing, interestingly relatable lyrical content and it’s all fucking War Möth, dude!
flyer_2017122912 songs, 46 minutes…I was kind bummed when it was over (that’s what the repeat function is for), especially when the last song has this infectious chorus, “the status quo, has got to go.” The first song is perfect as it’s kind of in the middle of where all the others are, but it’s you hard enough to get you’re attention, like in the movies where the unconscious guy gets a good hard slap to wake him up (anybody ever tried that).  Was trying to nail down the hits or faves of mine, but quite honestly there is not one song that sucks, I even liked the instrumentals, and usually get bored with those. There is no boredom factor though, no skip to the next tune, this is Humboldt County Rock and Roll at it’s very fucking finest.  I do love the metallized Eureka Bicycle Tweakers (do you have bicycle tweakers in your town), and the instrumental, British Petroleum, reminded me of the heaviness of Grimace (another seminal Humboldt metal band from 30 years ago), in fact, the other two tunes Sean wrote Always Pulling Back and Octomom are killers.  But shit, I did say none of the songs suck and, Wolf and Dan aren’t little boys, these are vets, experts with their instruments, no fucking around, they mean business  Lemme A Fiver and Inebriated Apes, really stood out for me but for completely different reasons, one is Motorhead-esque, while these other has the soul of Metalica.  If you wanted to make a list of bands that these guys remind you of, the list would be extensive, again because the songs are so varied, but I would throw in Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Hawkwind and what the hell, why not throw in ACDC.  They may be inspired by these and many others, but this is decided an original Humboldt County, kick you in your ass, metal band.

War Möth wins the staring contest every time, no sucker punches, straight fair fight, toe to toe with the best of ’em.  I also love the fact that they are good at the DIY thing, this is homemade like momma used to make…you want that prepackaged, generic shit, then go elsewhere.  Sean gave me their website addy, and I just kind of casually checked it out, but when I went back, it’s gives you a complete and real vibe to what the band is about.  I’ve run across a lot of these in the 11+ years I’ve been doing this and as far as band websites go, this one is top notch and represents the band well…sez a lot about their work ethic.  I mean really, why bother unless, you’re going to do it right.  That would be a good motto for the band, because these guys do it fucking right.

By the way, the gal who played drums has since moved on (shame cuz she is a real rocker and roller)…they’re looking for a replacement, if’n y’all play drums, dig playing hard rock/metaland live in Humboldt county. I don’t imagine it will take long for them to get back on their feet again, a good hard rock/metal drummer would get a kick outta jammin’ with them. Anyway…babbled on enough, the CD is available now, so go out and get ya one, everything War Möth is right fucking HERE!!! Cheers guys, wishing y’all nothing but happiness and success…

Beyond perfection, is reality…

WD40 jacketTraded emails with my old pal and fellow WD40 singer, Erio Brown recently and he sent me this pic of his vest. I forgot to ask him if it was a conversation piece as I could see folks asking who the fuck WD40 was. So stoked that he is alive and well, Husband and Father that he is. Had some pretty damn cool times with him and have nothing but warm feelings about those days…fucking fun. 30 years ago…doesn’t it look like we’re having fun?

PETE - by Lamar MilesSpeaking of the Humboldt days, anyone remember Pete? Picture of Pete I found surfing (photo by Lamar Miles). My pal Sylvia posted story from the Mad River Union that gives you some insight into his life today…made me think of this sculpture that I ran across a while back and have been saving for a special occasion.  Notice the Christ reference with the nail holes in his feet

Spinning on my virtual turntable at the moment, are these gals that I discovered because the Collector/Collection movie soundtracks, epic stuff.  Love two piece stuff, in fact wished I could play an instrument just so I could sing in a two piece…

Haven’t watched Saturday Night Live in a very long time, I have no idea who the cast are these days, but I guess Adam Sandler hosted the other night and killed it in the comedically somber sot of way. “We told you slow down you’ll end up like Belushi & Candy, he said those guys are my heroes that’s all fine and dandy”…

Mother’s Day weekend, a time for me to remember my deceased Mother who was always there for me and for about 2 1/2 years now our dialogue has been silent. Death and a survivor’s regret go hand in hand as I remember all those times she asked me to go out to lunch with her and my Aunt (now deceased as well), but I chose work over them…I’d quit my job for one more lunch with them. I have this client at work who talks to his Mom almost every night (jealous) and every morning, when he arrives at the center he walks by my office and just about always tells me he talked to his Mom, to I always ask, did you tell her you loved her? I think my Mom would have liked this song/band…

MASHABLAN! MASHABLAN! MASHABLAN!

Fucking HatFirst legitimate comment from some lucky fucker gets a MR hat (only got 5 made and the other four are spoke for)…my only stipulation is that you send a pic to the blog once you get it. If’n there’s any interest I may get a few more made, but for now somebody throw me a comment that wouldn’t mind representing the Relics…

Still gassing on remembering the mashablan thing from the last post, so much so that I felt like Wendy and the gang doing it proper…

My pal Björn steered off onto a Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds direction, that first album is a killer man, I like it better than the Birthday Party, which I wasn’t that into back in the early 80s when I first heard ’em. If y’all are Nick Cave fans, Björn also suggested The Red Hand Files
