Stuff #13

This is going to be somewhat of a mega post (it’ll blind you if you stare too long at it) as I haven’t done anything here in over a week (no bueno).  When I go that long, I’m bulging at the seams with music that needs listening to and I’ve got a few things that need said. Still feel like I have a lot on my plate, but this place, as has been said a thousand times before, is my solace, my home away from home. Now I feel all mushy inside…

Yes, I did watch the eclipse with “special” glasses (in all fairness to the Donald, I too did glance up at the eclipse with the naked eye, but that’s where our similarities end, because you are a bad man), and the McGregor vs. Mayweather fight and I tried watching MTVs VMAs (no bueno). On a fucking role baby.  Not even sure what I’m doin’ half the time, just kinda goin’ with the flow (and the flow is flowing, man).  Trying hard to stay away from politics and really anything that harshes my mellow. Is there such a thing as the Atlas complex, the weight of the world and all that, as if my caring was going to save the planet from humanity. Arm yourselves Brothers and Sisters, this is isn’t over by a long shot…6 Gun Groups That Aren’t for White Right-Wingers

It’s sad to say, but this blog is at the mercy of the omnipresent youtube (like everything on the internet, a scam, corporate whoredom). Went looking for the Beatles tune, “With a Little Help From My Friends” and it’s not fucking there! The Beatles in general have no presence there, except for tons of, as you can imagine, super lame karaoke covers. You ever vomit out of your nose? Did find a Ringo live version that (barely) satisfied my craving (short of pulling the record and giving it a spin, which is the path I should have taken)…

Not sure if it’s been mentioned before, that although I’m brain damaged today, I did get BA’s in Philosophy and Religious Studies in my youth. At this point, spiritually, I take what makes sense from all the shit I’ve studied from all over the world, throughout the years, and try to apply it to my life. The result I think is not perfect by a long shot, but I feel like I’m a pretty decent human being and certainly much better than I have been in the past. What I lack in smarts, hopefully is made up with the little bit of wisdom I’ve acquired over the years. My specialty then and now, was/is early Christian history. Despite the fact that I’ve read a lot from several renowned authors/scholars, I’m still an amateur on the subject, still admiring the tip of the iceberg. Fucking FB knows me better than I know myself, when it suggested I read an article about a recently discovered 1500 year old latin gospel commentary. Not only is there an article about the discovery, but you can download the Latin or English text! Brought out the nerd in me, a distraction from all the bullshit humanity has to offer, much like listening to the right song at the right time…

Was going to share these vids separately, as individual posts, but I lost interest in trying to come up with something to say.  It reminds me that the words here are a distraction, in other words, don’t let my babbling keep you from listening/enjoying the myriad of tunes I post.  Two concerts here by influential female fronted, early 80s punk bands…

My new virtual pal, Alex, at my request, turned me onto a bunch of his music, this here being his latest composition.  Very diggable electronica with a somber mood about it!  Need to put this on my iPod! for further late night contemplation and take this tune for a ride.  Here’s the deal from the soundcloud description, “Aviation Oak Pi Mi” is the fourth piece from the 2017 album “M. Tapio V.” by Alexander Wheill, the tribute/homage album to the musical and sound design genius of Mika Vainio (1963-2017). “Aviation Oak Pi Mi” was chosen as the pinultimate piece on the album due to its minimal but reverberating tones, slowly building up to a rhythmic structure, sometime spliced with by semi-random sound juxtapositions. While not being a “single”, it does capture the general mood and feel for the album “M. Tapio V.”.  This is just a taste though, go to the Wreck Age Recordings Soundcloud page to really walk into a room filled some killer virtual sounds. Perfect for a sesh with the headphones…

Another virtual pal, Fredrik has a second installment from his hard hittin’ blues rockin’ band Baba Vanga! If you dug the last song, which I of course did (otherwise I wouldn’t be talking about it), this one packs a one two punch after a mellow intro, followed by some serious rockin’. Fredrik packs one hell of a punch with his pipes and on guitar, while the rest of the band pummels with their tight musicianship. Sweden, baby, is on the map with these guys.  I was privy to a short vid of one of their rehearsals (thank a ton Fredrik) and I’ll be damned if they don’t rock out with this garage vibe that is reminiscent of the Cramps.  All five songs will be available next month or the month after, in what format I don’t know, but I’m hoping something physical (I see a mega-post being done of these guys when all is said and done)…

…and finally, the last thing on my virtual turntable (soon to be on my turntable in the Matrix), be still the “beating of my heart” the otherworldly Angels Dust has a new release. I shit you not, you must buy this record, Flavia and David are just getting better and better at their craft with time. I spent way too much money, but I bought one of each edition (there’s like ten very limited variations)…you only live once, right? Aurally I’m ecstatic about this thing, but I can’t wait to get my greedy little hands on a stack of these (even bought one for a friend of mine) and put the needle to one. Flavia’s voice takes me to another place, a sad place, dreamy but so real (if that makes any fuckin’ sense). Support this band, they are old friends of Mustard Relics (still have copies of the Martyred Heretics CDr, which features AD, hit me up for a free copy) and they are masters at what they do…

Baba Vanga – Loathing (And Other Feelings)

Don’t know if I mentioned it or not, been in touch with my virtual homeboy Björn, outta Sweden, as his old band Unter den Linden is about to break out with some new music. I’m all over that, and ASAP we will be featuring that when it breaks. Then outta the blue, got an email from Fredrik, Björn’s Nephew.  A fella would serve himself well to go back in time, here at the Relics, to check Fredrik’s band EON (out-fucking-standing demo cassette). Welp, he’s got a new band, goes by the name, Baba Vanga (not positive, but may be named after the blind Bulgarian mystic, clairvoyant, and herbalist, Baba Vanga). Anyway, if you like your heavy blues rock jammin’ then these cats are the band for you. Fredrik sent me a sort of bio of the band…
“It all started out in a mental institution 2015 with a music project run by myself and two fellow associates, Jimmy and Kris. The project had some success and enabled people suffering from various kind of hell to record their own songs and and jam with us. It was a positive thing in my opinion. One night we decided to jam. I had some sketches we improvised over and it all resulted in a hypnotic and spiritual vibe reminding of a bluesy ghost/horror, David Lynch surreal soul punched by William S. Burroughs poetry in the face. That was the feeling, it was easy and it felt right as rain. We recorded at Studio Nacksving in Gothenburg by Anders Lagerfors in late april 2017. The Baba Vanga music is about finding the roots of the late 1960´s and twisting´em to a somewhat more personal level and exploring the rough, nasty, dirty, unpleasant and brutal world through a filter of surrealism and noise. And of course have a great jam. We recorded our material the old school way, meaning recording it live with additional tracks.
Next friday 25/8 there will be another tune released by Baba Vanga -band. And in september/oktober all five tunes will be out there.
Jimmy plays the bas and harmonica. Kris plays the drums and Freddie plays the guitar and sings.
Hummin by kris and Jimmy.”
A few days after I got the email from Fredrik, Björn sent me a note to let me know about this band his Nephew was in (word of mouth baby). Björn called the band a “cocktail of stoner rock, psych+ a more modern approach.” They have an extremely big sound, the mix is professional sounding as all get out, but it’s a total fuckin teaser though, one tune is just not enough. Cheers to Fredrik for sending me this bad boy (we’ll get all the tunes represented here as soon as they are presented to me)…

EDIT: I’d like to see a bigger web presence for these guys.  Got 40 hits just on this post from the great nation of Sweden in 12 hours (but not one comment…kom igen grabbar…hahaha).

Weedeater

Was really wanting to see these guys in Kansas City next month, but 2 and 2 sometimes don’t equal 4. They have been on my virtual turntable off and on for a while now, I’m ready to take that critical step and see them rock the fuck out. Alas, unless I find someone to go with me, in this sea of fools I call NoWhere Kansas, it will not come to pass. In my youth I could make a 4/5 hour drive, go see a show, turn around and come home all in the same night, but old age has made me soft for the road. Spent the money I was going to use for the trip on the records instead at their Bandcamp.  Been watching their vids on YT, they have quite a few, live and studio, and just can’t get enough.  Did some reading about the history of the band, outta Wilmington, South Carolina (were my son lives).  Didn’t realize that the singer/bass player was in Buzzov*en, another beast of a band.  This here vid is from this year…

This one is also this year I believe…

I don’t know which drummer I like best, I think there’s been three (???), but I’ll be damned if they don’t all kick fuckin’ ass (this drummer may be my fave), 2010…

Girth – Adequate Girth

Don’t remember ever puking on someone but wonder in all those years of blackout drunkeness if maybe I have. I know I’ve puked on myself, in bed, in the car and pretty much everywhere. Watched the newest Cabin Fever movie last night and there was this one scene, where getting puked on by a diseased woman was the least of this guy’s worries.  Among the many apologies I owe people who have put up with me, if there’s someone out there that I puked on, please accept my humblest apologies…

Been getting comments from a couple different sources and just wanted to remind anyone who gives a fuck that I’m always adding to the Epic Tunes page here. Please, if you have a second, take a look at it, as I’m always game for something important in the history of recorded music, the epic-es-ness can only grow. Shit, just added 4 or 5 more “tunes” to the list thanx to Alex!  The photo above is early Plasmatics (they, made the cut).

How about a first world problem?  Was drinking my ice coffee and found a fly in it.  Not only was I disgusted, but I was hurt and felt slighted.  It was as if someone insulted me or perhaps threw up on me…

I was trading comments with a former home taper and it made me think of Kevyn Dymond who is God, the Humboldt Zappa, surrounding himself with only the best that was/is around that once wonderful place.  As far as I know he is still living and thriving, which makes him a living legend.  Don Campau of The Living Archive of Underground Music, an extraordinary home taper in his own right, has a nice write up on Dymond’s Lost In Public tape, “his deft and intricate musical chops accompanied by his cunning social observations created a thoroughly enjoyable, humorous and extremely captivating listening experience.” This tape is like all output that involves the man, a damn good listen.  On bass is the almighty Chuck (of One Man Running and Grimace) and on drums you get the super solid drumming of Mr John Bishop (I remember him being in lots of bands, but can’t picture his face, there’s my persistent problem with burnt brain cells and dain bramage).  This three piece rips it up and lyrically the listener is in for a treat…clever, funny and profoundly timeless. Next year this tape will be 30 and it’s still a darn good listen…

800th (fuckin’) Post (baby!)

The above photo is a classic, want to say, somewhere around 1988-9.  Sherri, botton left, got one of those photo things, where they offer you a free portrait, you get one copy, then try to get you to buy a bunch more.  She called us up apparently and we did the shoot.  My pal Sylvia got this from Sherri for me.  Starting from the top left, Zita, Beth, Gretchen, Ricky, Me, Sherri and Steve (pre-beard)

Speaking of Humboldt County, this badass old map is up at the HSU Library website, fully interactive and enlargeable, the whole county!

Wanted send out a hello to my old college crush, who will remain nameless (although she will probably never read this). I wrote this song about her way back when, my inability to let her know how much I cared for her and the subsequent regrets. In my humble opinion, one of the best tunes I’ve ever written and one of the best that Garden Weasel ever played…

A couple Humboldt recent re-up’s…
Out of Paint comp
Tina Frasier Memorial comp

The Humboldt days are long gone though, my path today is one of passive insanity, in relative isolation. My virtual turntable is a lesson in mania, this week one thing and next week something completely different. Or are they so different, it’s all emotion isn’t it? For better or worse, I work in a job that requires constant human contact, face to face, telephone, email, you name it, I even drive to have contact with people. I have to put on my happy mask 5 days a week and communicate with people who do not always want to communicate with me. They’re all caught up in their emotions and they aren’t masked, they’re out there for everyone to see (and “enjoy”). About a week ago it was pay day Friday, and I reminded every fellow employee of that, so went and hunted down this killer ZZ Top cover…
Ministry – Just Got Paid
Just recently found out that the Sin, the guitarist of Ministry, was in my graduating class at our high school (Go Bulldogs…hahaha). I knew him and if I remember correctly, we were friendly, but we hung out in totally different cliques. My Old pal Alex was pals with him, they were kind of part of the metal clique, I guess (not to be confused with the stoner clique, that was also into metal).  I was in the punk rock clique in high school, but in the stoner clique in junior high. The 80’s were a fun(ny) time in Burbank, we all had our uniforms on.
Rydeen – You Are Not Me
My 30 year reunion was a while back and I’m kicking myself now for not going (yet another regret). No reports back on how it went, but hopefully everyone had a good time.  30 years is a long time, I bet everyone’s got a lot of time under their belt (or on their back where I carry it).
Funny too how music triggers memories. I was raised in Volkswagen’s, shit, my first three cars were VWs.  I follow all these Vdub sites on FB.  Makes me think of Moms (She had several bugs and a fastback), all the riding around with her, to and fro, alway with the 70s music playing on the radio. This song played on the radio here just the other day, never knew who played it, kinda funny…
Jefferson Starship – Miracles

Just got back from a visit with my 88 year old Grandpa, spent the whole time talking about the olden days. It’s 1 am and after traveling all day to get home, I’m amped. First thing I found on YT to listen to before trying to hit the sack again…they’re playing in Kansas City next month and kinda have a hankering to go see ’em…

…and just for shits and grins, to finish this off on a Humboldt note, my lovely pal Dawn and I, long about 1988…
